England and Wales Pitted in the Same Group for 2027 Rugby World Cup Down Under

Draw event for the 2027 tournament
The group draw was conducted by rugby legends such as two-time World Cup winner Dan Carter.

England together with their Welsh counterparts have been drawn in the same group for the 2027 Rugby World Cup, promising a major pool stage clash in Australia. They are joined in Pool F by the Tongan Ikale Tahi and Zimbabwe.

This draw echoes their infamous clash in the group phase of the 2015 World Cup, where Wales' victory at England's home ground played a part in the hosts' surprise group stage elimination.

Key Group Draws

The Irish and Scotland have likewise been drawn in a pool together, replicating the scenario from the 2023 edition. In that tournament, they secured a convincing win, with Scotland unable to advance to the knockout stages.

Uruguay and Os Lobos, who each impressed as underdogs in France, complete that Pool D.

Significantly, the winners of these two groups are kept apart from holders and top-ranked South Africa until the final, presuming the Springboks top their assigned pool.

Tournament Ramifications

Should the pools play out in line with the current global standings, further leading contenders like the All Blacks and Les Bleus would remain separated from the likes of the English and the Irish until the championship decider.

Under those circumstances, Los Pumas would be the other top-ranked nation on that half of the knockout draw as England and Ireland.

Hosts Draw Blockbuster Opener

Tournament hosts Australia have been drawn alongside their trans-Tasman rivals and three-time winners the All Blacks in Pool A.

Australia will kick off the World Cup in Perth on 1 October 2027 in a marquee fixture designed to jump-start the competition.

In other groups, holders South Africa have been paired with the Azzurri, the Lelos and Romania. The French team are in a pool with the Brave Blossoms, 2031 hosts the United States and Samoa.

Larger Tournament for 2027

Los Pumas will take on the Flying Fijians, Los Leones and the Canadian team as the World Cup grows to twenty-four nations from the 20 who competed in France.

The 2027 tournament will feature a round of 16 round for the first time in Rugby World Cup history.

While the victor of England and Wales's group may be kept apart from some of the game's heavyweights initially, they will have to face the runner-up from Group B – probably the Italians – in the last 16.

Four of the other six group winners will play a team that finished third from the initial group phase.
