The EU could “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unwarranted” travel bans issued by the United States on five Europeans involved in combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted individuals that were at the heart of campaigns to introduce legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For too long, ideologues in Europe have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to coerce US companies to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the decision.
The bans were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner who helped draft the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as four anti-disinformation campaigners, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
This European legislation is seen by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders contend the regulations are essential to combat hate speech and falsehoods.
This row threatens to become a facet of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict between the current US administration and Europe.
